It is my privilege to nominate Katie Martin for the 2026 DAISY Nurse Educator Award. While it is impossible to fully capture the breadth of her contributions, Katie's impact on our nurses, our unit, and ultimately our patients is extraordinary.

From the moment a new nurse accepts a position, Katie begins building a supportive and welcoming environment. She personally reaches out to new hires before they even start, helping them feel valued and connected to the team. She consistently goes above and beyond by making herself available to answer questions, often fielding phone calls on her days off to ensure that new staff members feel supported and have the resources they need to succeed.

Katie's commitment to communication is one of her greatest strengths. She intentionally over-communicates to ensure everyone is aligned and informed, serving as a vital link between new nurses, preceptors, charge nurses, and leadership. Through this collaborative approach, she helps create a holistic orientation experience that prepares nurses not only to complete orientation successfully but also to thrive as independent practitioners.

What truly sets Katie apart is her unwavering dedication to the success of every orientee. New nurses frequently comment on her willingness to listen, her ability to ease fears and anxieties, and her proactive approach to problem-solving. She checks in with new staff members almost daily, providing encouragement, support, and guidance throughout their first year and often well beyond. Her active listening and genuine investment in each individual's growth foster confidence and resilience during what can be one of the most challenging transitions in a nurse's career.

Katie has also transformed our onboarding and educational experience through innovation and thoughtful program development. She has enhanced NICU Fundamentals learning days, creating a comprehensive educational program that helps nurses feel supported and confident in their learning journey. Recognizing the value of diverse perspectives, she incorporates a multidisciplinary approach by engaging unit experts, providers, and key team members in the educational process. This exposure allows learners to gain a deeper understanding of the patient population we serve and the collaborative nature of care delivery within our NICU.

In addition, Katie thoughtfully coordinates orientation schedules and develops unit-based education tailored specifically to our unique patient population, ensuring that learning experiences address needs that may not be fully covered through the nurse residency program. Her ability to individualize education while simultaneously managing the needs of multiple new hires is remarkable.

Perhaps most impressive is Katie's ability to maintain positivity, professionalism, and excellence while supporting as many as fifteen new hires at one time. Despite these demands, she consistently prioritizes the needs of her learners. Numerous nurses have shared how impressed they are by her ability to juggle competing priorities while ensuring that each person feels seen, supported, and valued. She routinely invests extra time providing one-on-one education and coaching to nurses who may be struggling, helping them build confidence and achieve success.

Katie's insights and close engagement with new staff have also been invaluable to our leadership team. Through her ongoing assessments and relationships, she helps identify nurses who may need additional support, allowing us to intervene early and strengthen retention efforts. Her advocacy, mentorship, and dedication have directly contributed to the success of countless nurses and the overall strength of our team.

Simply put, Katie embodies the very best of nursing education. She inspires others, creates meaningful learning opportunities, supports professional growth, demonstrates exceptional leadership, and makes a lasting difference in the lives of nurses and the patients they care for.

Thank you, Katie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
