This nurse became the patient advocate and supporter.
This nomination is to highlight the contributions of one of our team members in our Pediatric ED at Douglas. Last week, a community member sought medical treatment for her baby in the pediatric ED. During her visit, it was revealed that she had left a domestic situation with only the items she could carry and her child. She had no resources, no items for the baby, including diapers, formula, and clothing. Arrangements had been made for shelter, but the other necessities were not available to her. This nurse became the patient advocate and supporter. She shared the information with the pediatric team and discussed the available opportunities so that they, as a group, could support this mother. She collected donations and sought to provide assistance. She was able to take the funds collected and purchase the specialty formula needed for the baby. She was able to supply diapers and coordinated donations for other needed items. She led the pediatric team in caring for and assisting this mom and baby. Additionally, she assembled and led an initiative to provide age-appropriate toys for the pediatric department, which could be used as needed for specific age groups. She developed the list, created signage, and collaborated to share the availability of the toy bins with all ED staff. Her work and commitment to better opportunities for the pediatric population of our community make her a great candidate for the DAISY Award. Her awareness of patient needs and her willingness to drive opportunities and fill patient needs demonstrate her heart for the pediatric population. Great Work, Katie Harteau, RN.
