On Monday night, after an incredibly stressful and emotional weekend, I walked into my mother’s room for our nightly visit and found that her nurse had the game on for her and had decorated her window with “Go Hoosiers!”
My mother is currently in the CCU on ECMO. She is a proud Indiana University alumna and lifelong Hoosier fan. This year, Indiana made history by reaching the College Football National Championship — something my mother has waited her entire life to see. Due to her critical condition, she was unable to be part of that moment with our family. Throughout her stay, our family wore Hoosier attire, and we casually mentioned the game to the nursing staff. On Monday night, after an incredibly stressful and emotional weekend, I walked into my mother’s room for our nightly visit and found that her nurse had the game on for her and had decorated her window with “Go Hoosiers!” I immediately broke down in tears. In the middle of machines, alarms, fear, and uncertainty, this nurse saw who my mother is, not just how sick she is. That small, thoughtful act brought comfort, normalcy, and dignity into a very frightening time. It reminded us that she is still herself — a mother, a fan, a person — not just a patient on ECMO. This act of kindness did more for our family than words can express. It showed genuine compassion, emotional intelligence, and a deep commitment to patient-centered care. It is something I will never forget, and it exemplifies exactly what nursing should be. We will forever be grateful for what nurses do, not just for our mother, but for all the patients at Spartanburg Medical Center.
