Katie went above and beyond not only in caring for the patient physically but also emotionally to help her feel more human and normal.
Katie went above and beyond for a special patient who has been in the hospital for over a month. She was the nurse for this patient's first outpatient right heart cath. The patient had to get admitted to CVICU with the swan left in her neck.
Katie was amazingly supportive throughout that initial experience, holding the patient's hand, providing emotional support, and listening to the patient's fears and concerns. The patient had to come back to the cath lab many times in the next few weeks for repositioning of the Swan, and Katie would always check in, even if she wasn't her nurse.
The patient now has an Impella placed and will be in the hospital until she gets a heart transplant. She has been in the hospital for over a month now. When Katie heard that the patient would be coming back to the cath lab for a scheduled right heart cath, she organized a taco party for the patient because a few weeks ago, the patient mentioned that she was really craving tacos, and Katie remembered.
She coordinated everything and then surprised the patient by asking her if she would eat lunch with us. The patient was so appreciative and has been sad about being in the hospital for so long. Katie went above and beyond not only in caring for the patient physically but also emotionally to help her feel more human and normal. Katie provides great patient care every day, but is willing to go the extra mile to make this patient's day.
Thank you, Katie, for being a great member of the cath lab team. Our patients are lucky to have you!
