Her care and support that she gave me from this space allowed me to surrender to the process of self-reflection and peace, and face the situation with courage and resolve...
I was admitted to the hospital through the ER twice within the same month for treatment of pneumonia while undergoing chemotherapy for stage IV breast cancer with metastasis to the liver and brain. During one of the many scares that I underwent during my stay, it was discovered that the brain mets had progressed, and the source of the extreme abdominal pain I was experiencing was very probably coming from the liver mets.
Both discoveries and revelations were difficult for me to navigate physically and emotionally, and Kay was the picture of compassion, strength, and joy. Her care and support that she gave me from this space allowed me to surrender to the process of self-reflection and peace, and face the situation with courage and resolve, and allowed Kay to help me deal with the pain, medications, doctors, and procedures without feeling overwhelmed.
She helped me immensely with the process by writing the information on my room board, anticipating procedures and medication schedules so that I was always prepared and educated. Her positivity inspired me. Her standard of care always exceeded excellence. She was always looking for ways to help and make my very difficult experience better.
Kay is an extraordinary nurse and deserves to be nominated for the DAISY Award and any hospital who has the privilege of her service should consider themselves fortunate.
