Due to the hands-on from that team and Kathleen Selby and her leadership, my husband was transferred where his care was continued.
My husband came in to make a snack, and I noticed his slurred speech and face were very distorted; his left arm was curled into a non-moving fixture, and he looked at me helplessly. We called EMS and brought him to Raulerson ED. They allowed all of us to stay there with him, where many prayers were being said. This is when Kathleen Selby, BSN, RN, entered our lives.
My first encounter was not pleasant, mostly due to my fear and the stress of the moment, but she kept her strong RN caregiver attitude and forged ahead with no judgement, directing an awesome team of professionals to do what they had to do, all the time listening to the Neurosurgeon- on the telehealth screen. Due to the hands-on from that team and Kathleen Selby and her leadership, my husband was transferred where his care was continued. He had 100% blockage, but their fast actions at Raulerson, under Kathleen's direction, kept him going. The miracle of this episode was 24 hours and 6 minutes after S was discharged to home with no long-term paralysis, speech returned, and all use of his left side.
Yes, the power of prayer is essential in this episode, but also the quick action of EMS and the team under Kathleen Selby and staff and the surgical skills all completed the teamwork that has S alive and still serving at our church and community of Okeechobee.
