I would like to nominate Kathy Barger, RN, Assistant Director of Case Management, as the DAISY Nurse Leader of the Year. Kathy epitomizes the true meaning of the word "leader" each and every day. A dedicated, consummate professional who leads by example, she truly inspires us with her compassion, limitless energy, and insight. She always goes above and beyond to ensure our work is exceptional and of the highest standards, and gives us the tools to make it so! Kathy is always open to new ideas and suggestions and is willing to allow us to grow in our role as Case Managers. Her vast knowledge and experience are unparalleled, and along with her leadership skills, these make a huge difference and are the reason our department runs like a well-oiled machine!
Kathy's main focus is the patient and her staff. She provides unending support that cannot be measured. She is proactive and motivates and challenges us to be our very best. She cares so much and it shows in everything she says and does. Words cannot express what Kathy means to our department and it reflects in what we do to provide quality care, while providing a positive patient experience. We are always supported, are given guidance, direction, and supervision. Kathy is a leader who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way! Leadership is practiced not so much in words, as in attitude and actions!
Kathy values our input and opinions: she gives us the confidence to be autonomous and creates strong work ethics, which leads to fulfillment in our roles as Case Managers and our nursing profession. Her passion for her role comes shining through in every facet of her job. We are so lucky to have Kathy as a mentor and role model. She has a heart of gold and is a true leader who inspires us every day. She is caring, thoughtful, and respectful to all of her staff, patients, and visitors. She is an example of what a Northwell employee should be.
