Katie Sapp has been a Clinical Leader in the PACU for almost 10 years, but even before stepping into that role, she was already an active and trusted leader in our department. One of Katie’s main responsibilities is creating the PACU schedule, and she truly goes above and beyond. She works tirelessly to make sure staff have schedules that support a healthy work–life balance while still meeting the constantly changing needs of a busy procedural area. On top of that, Katie also manages the schedule for the 2600 SIP extended stay unit. Although this is a semi-temporary unit, she consistently coordinates with that team to ensure they have the support and staffing they need.

Katie has a genuine heart and passion for both the PACU team and our patients. She is a strong patient advocate and consistently supports nurses in maintaining safe, appropriate plans of care in the PACU and beyond. She does this not only during regular hours, but also during off hours and call times when the team needs leadership and guidance the most. Especially in the last few months, when we have had an interim manager covering our department.

Katie is often the first person to identify a problem within the unit and come up with ideas to fix it. At the same time, she is always open to suggestions and input from others. Her goal is never just efficiency — it is to create a unit that functions well, supports staff, and remains safe and comfortable for patients. She is also deeply passionate about giving back to the community. For years, Katie has spearheaded and organized our unit’s involvement with Primetime585, supporting families during Thanksgiving and Christmas. She coordinates donations, shops for families, and personally delivers meals and presents. Katie also organizes PACU participation in the Autism Open each year, encouraging team members to volunteer and be involved.

Katie understands how important morale and connection are within a team. She regularly organizes team outings and recently planned our first post-COVID PACU Christmas party, helping to rebuild team bonding after a challenging few years.

In addition to being an exceptional leader, Katie remains a skilled and compassionate clinician. She provides kind, gentle care to patients waking from anesthesia and sets an example of calm, patient-centered nursing for those around her. In my 17 years at RGH, I have met very few people willing to give as much of themselves as Katie does for anyone who works here. It is truly an honor to work with her, and I cannot think of a more deserving recipient of the Leadership DAISY Award.

Thank you, Katherine, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
