Katherine Hahn, BSN, RN
Katherine showed extraordinary compassion, empathy, and humanity when caring for a critically ill patient on our unit in a particularly challenging situation. She noticed that the patient's young child, who was visiting at the bedside, needed care too.
She took time to gently brush her matted hair, braiding what she could. She found snacks for her, printed coloring sheets to keep her occupied, and sat with her at the nurses' station, talking to her and listening to her, providing her comfort during a very overwhelming experience.
Her compassion became even more evident when conversations between the adults in the room escalated; they calmly removed her from the room and ensured she remained safe at the nurses' station and shielded her from the harsh words. She expressed her concerns about the call and the child's safety to social workers so they could be addressed.
She cared for this child while she visited her mother, who was critically ill and her guardian was unavailable to care for her. Her actions were not driven by obligation but by genuine kindness and a deep commitment to caring for the whole family, including a child whose needs could easily have been overlooked.
