I am recognizing Katey for her exceptional courage, quick thinking, and compassionate care during an out-of-the-ordinary situation.

We had a patient arrive at this stand-alone ED in active labor, and Katey was our charge nurse. Katey immediately took action by bringing the patient back to her room. Katey stepped up and led our team by assigning roles to each staff member to ensure we were able to provide patient care calmly and efficiently. She made sure that our team was focused on the quality and safety of the patient's care. She was patient, kind, and supportive to a very anxious laboring mother and family. In a chaotic moment for this family, she provided reassurance and created an environment of safety and trust in this ED.

The most exceptional part of this story is how Katey stepped up to assist transport by accompanying the mother on the way to the birth center, 48 minutes away. In a matter of minutes, the labor escalated, and they were unsure if they could get the patient to the birthing center before delivery. Transport made the decision to pull over to provide a safe environment for delivery. Without any hesitation, Katey stepped up in a less than ideal situation and assisted the mother through the delivery 
of the baby and provided newborn care. This is a scenario that would make even the most seasoned providers pause; however, Katey showed no hesitation and was nothing short of extraordinary when delivering the baby.

I can't think of anyone more deserving of this award after witnessing her compassion and dedication to the patient and her family. It's a situation that we will never forget and one that perfectly represents the type of nurse I aspire to be.
