September 2026 Honoree
Katelyn Mitchell, RN, BSN
I am honored to commend Katelyn Mitchell for the extraordinary care she provided to my grandmother during her time at Grandview Medical Center. My grandmother was brought to the Emergency Department from a Physical Recovery Center on Wednesday. A transition from a recovery facility to the hospital can be frightening and disorienting, especially for an older patient who is already vulnerable.
From the moment Katelyn greeted my grandmother, she brought a sense of calm into the room. She smiled warmly, spoke with kindness, and immediately made my grandmother feel seen, heard, respected, and safe. What stood out most was that Katelyn did not treat my grandmother like another patient, room number, or task to complete. She treated her like a person with dignity, history, fears, and a family who loved her. She took the time to establish trust, explain what was happening, and create reassurance in a setting that can easily feel overwhelming. That kind of presence matters deeply in the ED, where patients and families are often anxious, uncertain, and afraid.
One moment in particular will stay with our family. During multiple X-rays, Katelyn put on protective lead so she could remain close to my grandmother, comfort her, and hold her hand. She could have stepped away. She could have completed the clinical requirements and moved on to the next task. Instead, she chose to stay present. She chose human connection. She chose to make sure my grandmother did not feel alone. That simple act, holding her hand while wearing protective lead, captured exactly what makes Katelyn such an exceptional nurse. It showed compassion, advocacy, professionalism, and a deep understanding that healing is not only clinical. It is also emotional. It is the reassurance that someone is there, paying attention, and caring about you as a human being.
Katelyn’s concern did not end when my grandmother left the Emergency Department. Throughout my grandmother’s inpatient stay, Katelyn continued to check on her. Even after discharge, she continued to ask about her and show concern for her well-being. That continuity of care meant a great deal to our family. It showed us that Katelyn's compassion was not limited to a single shift or assignment. Her care was genuine. As a family member, I cannot overstate the comfort Katelyn gave us. She gave us confidence that my grandmother was not only being clinically monitored, but truly cared for. She brought dignity, calm, and kindness to a stressful moment. And she made my grandmother feel safe and valued when she needed it most.
Katelyn Mitchell is a fantastic nurse and a beautiful example of what the DAISY Award is meant to recognize. Her care reflected the highest ideals of nursing: compassion in action, respect for the person, advocacy at the bedside, and a willingness to go above and beyond ordinary expectations. For the meaningful impact she had on my grandmother and our family, Katelyn is deeply deserving of this recognition.
