October 2026 Honoree
Kate Hopp, BSN, RN
This patient has been in the hospital for twelve days and has been a challenge for those caring for him overnight due to his dementia and delirium, possible sundowning, which worsens in the evenings. Kate Hopp was clued in, listened to her patient, and reported his symptoms to the night on-call hospitalist team.
The patient complained of chest discomfort and had an episode of emesis, which was reported to the on-call team. I was on call and responded. I ordered a STAT EKG and troponin; the EKG resulted first, which showed ST elevation in several leads. I discussed this with Dr. G, who was on overnight call for general cardiology, and confirmed STEMI; the STEMI line was promptly activated, and care was discussed with Dr. B. Had Kate not taken the patient seriously and dismissed his symptoms, the patient was at risk for increased morbidity and/or mortality, but her quick assessment and reporting allowed the patient to be seen and evaluated very quickly.

Thank you, Kate, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
