Some nurses care for patients. Exceptional nurses care for the entire family. Kassie Blum did both.

Kassie cared for a 37-year-old woman whose decade-long battle with cancer was coming to an end. For more than ten years, she fought with remarkable strength and determination. When it became clear that the focus needed to shift from curing to comforting, Kassie became her fiercest advocate.

Her greatest wish was simple yet profound: to spend her final days at home, surrounded by the people she loved. Her father had left his own home and moved into the hospital with one purpose: to learn everything he needed to know to care for his daughter. Kassie recognized this wasn't just a discharge plan; it was a father’s final act of love.

She never rushed through teaching. Instead, she sat beside him, patiently showing him how to slowly drain the PleurX catheter, explaining what to watch for, answering each question, and making sure he felt confident, not overwhelmed. She spent hours educating him about the dying process, preparing him for what to expect, and reassuring him that he would not be alone in caring for his daughter.

But Kassie’s compassion reached far beyond the bedside. She understood that this family included a husband who desperately wanted to be with his wife but couldn’t leave home because he was caring for their most treasured gift- their 13-year-old daughter. Rather than allowing him to feel distant from his wife’s care, Kassie became his connection. She called him throughout the day with updates, patiently answered countless questions, and ensured he understood every change in his wife’s condition and every decision being made. Although he could not be at the bedside, Kassie made sure he remained an active part of his wife’s care and could keep supporting her in the ways only a devoted husband can.

Kassie also recognized how meaningful it was for their daughter to spend precious time with her mother. She understood these were not simply visits; they were memories in the making, moments her daughter would carry for the rest of her life. Every interaction was approached with compassion and grace, helping preserve an environment of peace, dignity, and love for a family navigating the unimaginable.

Recognizing the trust this family had placed in her, Kassie even worked extra shifts to provide continuity of care. She knew that during such a fragile time, a familiar face brought comfort that could never be measured. Her continued presence gave the patient and her family reassurance that they would not have to start over with someone new during the most difficult days of their lives.

Kassie tirelessly advocated for everything that would make the patient’s final journey as peaceful as possible. She pushed for a PCA to better control her pain, advocated for increased oxygen-not only to ease her breathing, but to give her body the strength and comfort needed to make it home-and coordinated with multiple disciplines to remove every barrier standing between this young woman and her final wish. Every conversation, every phone call, and every intervention was centered on honoring what mattered most to the patient and her family.

While many people saw a terminal diagnosis, Kassie saw a daughter who deserved dignity, a wife whose husband deserved to be included, a young mother whose child needed precious moments with her, and a father who needed guidance. She understood that nursing extends far beyond medications and procedures; it is about preserving hope when healing is no longer possible and creating peace amid heartbreak.

As Kassie’s final shift ended, the patient prepared for what everyone knew would likely be her last journey home. Before leaving, Kassie didn’t simply say goodbye. She embraced both the patient and her father, sharing tears that reflected the deep bond they had formed over days of walking this difficult road together. Then she prayed with them, asking for peace, comfort, and strength for the days ahead.

At that moment, Kassie was more than a nurse. She was a source of hope when there was no cure, a steady presence amid heartbreak, and a reminder that no family should ever face life’s hardest moments alone.

Her medications, education, and advocacy were exceptional. But what this family will remember forever is how she made them feel. She honored a young woman’s final wishes, empowered a father to care for his daughter with confidence, ensured a husband remained connected despite the distance, treasured the special moment between a mother and her 13-year-old daughter, and surrounded an entire family with compassion when they needed it most.

Kassie reminds us that while curing is not always possible, caring always is. Her clinical excellence was undeniable, but her ability to see the humanity behind every diagnosis, to care for a patient, empower a father, support a husband, comfort a child, and walk beside an entire family through one of the most difficult chapters of their lives, truly set her apart. She exemplifies the very spirit of the DAISY Award and is profoundly deserving of this recognition.

Thank you, Kassie, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
