I would like to nominate Kasey James for a DAISY Award in recognition of her exceptional care and compassion during a profoundly difficult time for my family. My uncle, who was suffering from terminal cancer, experienced a critical incident where he coded on the floor and was successfully resuscitated. He was placed on life support at that time and was moved to the ICU that night.
In accordance with his wishes not to be kept on machines, he was made a DNR (Do Not Resuscitate). Kasey took over his care the following morning. It was important to my uncle that if he were terminal and unable to have a quality of life, he did not want to be kept on machines that would only prolong his suffering. He was genuinely afraid of enduring pain and discomfort without the possibility of recovery. He wanted us to let him go peacefully when the time came.
Upon beginning her care for him in the ICU, I shared these wishes with Kasey, requesting that she escalate these concerns to his medical team. Kasey not only listened but took immediate action to coordinate my uncle's care in a way that ensured my aunt and their children fully understood everything that was happening. She facilitated open communication between my aunt and the physicians, providing education and support that were crucial for making informed decisions about his treatment.
