Keri spearheaded a coordinated effort to ensure that four children and their mother, who was also expecting a baby girl, experienced care, inclusion, and dignity during the holidays.
Keri consistently demonstrates professional and ethical standards as outlined in the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, particularly the ethical principles of compassion, dignity, justice, and advocacy for individuals and families experiencing vulnerability.
During the holiday season, Keri and her team identified a family facing profound loss and hardship following the death of a loved one. Recognizing the ethical responsibility nurses must uphold human dignity and respond to suffering, Keri took the courageous initiative and, without expecting recognition, supported this family in a meaningful way by assuming her “Shopper” role.
Keri spearheaded a coordinated effort to ensure that four children and their mother, who was also expecting a baby girl, experienced care, inclusion, and dignity during the holidays. She assumed responsibility as the designated shopper and demonstrated ethical stewardship by thoughtfully managing staff contributions, ensuring resources were used responsibly and equitably.
Her ethical awareness was evident in her attention to inclusion and fairness. Keri ensured that every child, the unborn baby, and the expecting mother were accounted for when shopping for gifts, making sure no one was overlooked. She led a team in wrapping gifts and transformed a classroom into a living room-style space, intentionally creating an environment of safety, warmth, and respect where the family could gather as a unit.
When the family arrived, the impact of Keri’s ethical leadership was profound. The mother was overwhelmed with emotion—not only by the gifts, but by the recognition of her family’s worth and dignity during a time of loss and grief. This moment reflected ethical nursing at its core: responding to human need with compassion, presence, and moral courage.
Most reflective of Keri’s ethical character is her refusal to seek recognition for her actions. Her motivation was grounded in values, not visibility. These acts of kindness are not isolated moments but are woven into Keri's daily nursing practice—quietly upholding ethical norms, advocating for those experiencing inequity, and modeling compassion for colleagues and families alike.
Keri Daly reminds us that ethics in nursing are lived through action. Her courage, integrity, and humanity exemplify the spirit of the DAISY Award for Nursing Ethics and the highest ideals of our profession.
It is my honor today to recognize Keri Daly for her unwavering commitment to ethical nursing practice and to the human values that define who we are as nurses.
