Karen White, BSN, RN

Karen exemplifies the very spirit and purpose of the DAISY Award. She consistently demonstrates extraordinary compassion, commitment, and dedication not only to her patients, but also to her colleagues, volunteers, and the entire NCH community.

Karen is known throughout PAT for her bubbly personality, infectious positivity, and genuine kindness. She always takes the time to recognize and celebrate others, ensuring that team members feel valued, appreciated, and seen. Her ability to uplift those around her creates an environment where people feel supported and inspired to do their best work.

Her contributions to nursing at NCH extend far beyond her daily responsibilities. Karen was a member of the original DAISY Committee and played an instrumental role in helping expand and strengthen the DAISY program. She has devoted countless hours to nursing leadership and professional practice through her involvement in numerous NCH nursing committees, including Shared Governance Councils, CITOC, and the Clinical Ladder Council.

Karen's passion for nursing excellence has earned her recognition well beyond the walls of NCH. She has had the honor of presenting at the national Magnet Conference, sharing her expertise and accomplishments with nursing leaders from across the country. Most recently, she was selected once again to represent NCH nationally and showcase the success of the PAT pre-operative call process. Her ability to inspire and educate others reflects her unwavering commitment to strengthening the nursing profession and improving patient care.

Karen is also recognized for the enthusiasm and joy she brings to every interaction. From her colorful outfits and signature jewelry to her signature display of patriotism through her red, white, and blue attire and office decorations, she brightens the days of everyone she encounters. Thousands of patients have been welcomed by Karen's warm smile and caring presence, often distracted by her humor and colorful, spirited office setting, finding comfort during what can be stressful healthcare experiences.

What is most remarkable is Karen's selfless dedication to recognizing others. During Volunteer Appreciation Week, she has personally purchased gifts and recognition items with her own money, refusing reimbursement because she simply wants volunteers to feel appreciated. On her days off, she comes to work specifically to create displays, decorate walls, and design recognition murals for volunteers. She asks for no recognition in return.

That same dedication is evident in her commitment to the DAISY program. Karen rarely misses a DAISY Patrol and frequently comes in on her days off, decked in her famous DAISY attire, to celebrate fellow nurses receiving this meaningful recognition. Her joy in honoring others is a testament to her servant-leadership and deep appreciation for the nursing profession.

Beyond her service and volunteerism, Karen is funny, compassionate, and deeply caring. She goes above and beyond for her patients, coworkers, and volunteers because she genuinely wants to make a positive difference in their lives. She leads through kindness, generosity, and example, inspiring everyone fortunate enough to work alongside her.
