I am so grateful for her. She may not have known the impact she had at the time.
My 15-year-old was admitted to the third hospital in seven days with a mental health crisis and vomiting. It was also around the holidays. Karen had my daughter for at least two shifts. She was caring and compassionate with my daughter and me. She checked with me on the care of my daughter, as well as encouraging me to take a break, eat, and drink water.
She helped explain the medical plan when asked, clarified meds, and helped with discharge planning so we could discharge in time for Christmas. She sat and listened when I needed to vent, and she provided emotional support when I needed it.
When a child has a mental health crisis, it often feels like the medical professionals are judging the parents, despite the fact that we are seeking help. I have felt that judgment many times. Karen didn't judge. She encouraged and took the time to listen to my teen and observe our interactions. She empowered my child and me to ask questions and advocate.
I am so grateful for her. She may not have known the impact she had at the time. Kindness and empathy go a long way to help heal and support families. Thank you!
