Kandy met professionalism with empathy and delivered life-changing kindness.
I am honored to nominate Kandy for the DAISY Award because of the extraordinary compassion, skill, and kindness she demonstrated to her patient and their family when they withdrew care for their loved one. Kandy discovered that the patient had been a nurse for over 30 years and took it upon herself to honor her in her last days. She purchased nurse lamps, white roses, and printed off the nurse’s pledge and set up a beautiful tribute to her patient’s legacy. She placed a rose across the patient’s hands and set the lamp and pledge near her. Her family appreciated it more than words could describe and stated, “This is what mom loved to do. This was her calling, and now she can rest in peace doing what she felt she was created to do. Serve. This is just so beautiful, and I am forever grateful. I want her to be buried with the lamp and rose.”
Kandy stayed past her shift until the family left because compassion has no clock. She walked the family down to the lobby, she cried with them, and she embraced them. Shemet them where they were at and was a “beacon of light” in that family’s darkest day. They family used words such as, angel, genuine, seen, and heard when describing what RN’s actions meant to them.
Kandy went out of her way to purchase these lamps and roses, and to print out the nursing pledge. She called on fellow nurses, some of whom came in on their day off, to surround the patient and pay tribute to her and the sacrificial life she lived. This act of kindness was not just part of their job but a reflection of their heart. Kandy met professionalism with empathy and delivered life-changing kindness. It was such an honor to witness and be part of. A DAISY Award recipient reminds us that nursing is both science and art – tooted in skill but powered by kindness. They are a shining example of what it means to care with both hands and heart. What we do is immeasurable and is evident in Kandy’s actions. I am grateful to be mentored by this RN and to call her a friend. She is the definition of a DAISY recipient. With heartfelt appreciation, a fellow nurse.
