Kamiah had a patient who required extensive care and monitoring. From the moment the report was given to her, she was locked in, quick and efficient with her patient care. The family was understandably sad, stressed, angry, and on edge. She made sure to use therapeutic communication, explaining what she was doing and why, not only to the family, but to the intubated and sedated patient as well.
Even after the patient coded three times on her shift, she continued to provide excellent nursing care, not just for the patient, but also went the extra mile to play gospel music for the family who relied heavily on their faith to cope. After giving the report, Kay made sure to go around and hug every family member in the room, even if they weren’t nice to her. She maintained professionalism and compassion. Kamiah not only showed her strong skills as a critical care nurse but also her caring and empathetic heart.
As her preceptor, I am incredibly proud of the ICU nurse she has become.
