These moments brought him so much joy and comfort.
I was alone overnight with my almost 2-year-old son at Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center in the pediatric unit. When we first arrived, he was low energy, but by the time the shift change came around, he had perked up, even though it was 7 PM and well past his normal bedtime. That night, Nurse Kam Johnson went above and beyond in ways I will never forget. She made me feel seen, not just as a mother to a sick child, but as a person who needed rest, reassurance, and compassion. Around 11 PM, when my son was still wide awake, Kam encouraged me to take a short break and walk the halls. It may sound small, but in that moment, it meant everything. While I stepped away, she stayed in the room playing with my son, giving him her full attention and energy to keep him safe and entertained. My son immediately connected with her. He loved her Stitch badge reel, and they bonded over her dog, Remi. She let him wear gloves and pretend to be the doctor every time she came in, and he was awake. He would say, “Clap your hands,” and she would clap along with him. These moments brought him so much joy and comfort. Throughout the night, Kam always checked on us quietly and respectfully, asking if we needed anything and never making us feel like an inconvenience. One of the most touching gestures was when she came in at 4 AM with a brand new toy to help distract and comfort my son during his lab draws. He was a hard stick, with only three usable limbs and tiny foot veins, but she and the team handled it with care and precision. She kept me updated constantly, coming in with lab status updates which felt like every 20 minutes, and made sure I always knew what was going on. At one point, as we were reflecting on how well my son was handling everything, we had a brief, lighthearted conversation about how proud we were of him. We both noted that, despite my having many tattoos and her having multiple piercings, IVs, and blood draws, are still something we struggle with. Yet here was this little boy taking it all in stride. It was a simple moment of shared understanding and pride, and it meant so much to feel that connection. Kam’s attention to detail, her compassion, and the way she interacted with both my son and me made all the difference. She didn’t just care for his medical needs; she cared for his spirit. And she didn’t just support me as a caregiver, she reminded me that I’m human, too. I will never forget her kindness, and I will always be grateful for the comfort she brought to us during such a difficult time.
