May 2025 Honoree
Kalinda McCrary, LPN
I was fortunate to work with Kalinda as a student nurse for a couple of weeks, and I must say she is a wonderful nurse and an exceptional teacher. From the very beginning, she created a welcoming, supportive environment that eased my nerves and encouraged me to ask questions and build confidence. Kalinda consistently demonstrated compassion, professionalism, and critical thinking in every interaction with patients and colleagues. She was incredibly organized and attentive to detail, setting a strong example of how to manage a busy clinical setting without compromising patient care.
One instance that stands out was when she calmly and efficiently managed a patient with rapidly deteriorating vital signs. She explained every step she took, ensuring I understood the rationale behind each action and turning it into an invaluable learning experience. What impressed me most was her patience and willingness to teach. She never made me feel like a burden and always took the time to explain procedures, review documentation, and share her clinical reasoning. She also gave me opportunities to practice skills under her supervision, which significantly boosted my confidence and competence. Kalinda's professionalism, kindness, and mentorship left a lasting impression on me. She embodies the qualities of an outstanding nurse: knowledgeable, compassionate, and dedicated to both her patients and the next generation of nurses. I'm truly grateful to have learned from her.
One memorable situation that truly demonstrated Kalinda's dedication and compassion involved an elderly patient who was confused, at times non-verbal, and unable to feed themselves. While the ward was busy and staff were stretched thin, Kalinda made sure this patient never felt neglected or rushed. During one mealtime, I watched as Kalinda carefully prepared the patient's tray. She cut the food into small, manageable pieces to reduce the risk of choking and sat by the patient's side, gently feeding them at their own pace. She spoke to the patient throughout, offering encouragement and comfort, even though they couldn't always respond. Her patience and care in that moment were incredibly moving; it wasn't just about feeding, it was about preserving the patient's dignity.
In that same shift, I also saw Kalinda respond promptly to multiple call lights, even when they weren't from her assigned patients. She didn't hesitate to step in where help was needed. At one point, she noticed a patient's nasal cannula had slipped out, and their oxygen saturation was dropping. She calmly adjusted it, checked their oxygen levels, and ensured they were stable before moving on, all while reassuring the patient and explaining what she was doing. These everyday actions may seem small, but they speak volumes about Kalinda's character. She treats every patient with respect, takes the time to do things right, and never overlooks the details that make all the difference in patient safety and comfort. Watching her work reminded me that great nursing isn t just about clinical skill, it s about heart.
