Her steady, calming presence during times of crisis provided tremendous comfort to our family.
Our family welcomed baby B at Nemours Advanced Delivery Unit. B was born with a giant Omphalocele, which led to many other issues resulting in a NICU stay of more than 100 days.
During her stay, B required intensive, high-acuity care, including intubation and multiple critical infusions. While we are thankful for the entire NICU team who provided care for our precious girl, we built a special relationship with Kailin, whose presence made an extraordinarily difficult time more manageable for our family.
Kailin consistently provided exceptional nursing care to B each shift, but she also cared for B’s worried family, who spent nearly every day at her bedside throughout her NICU stay. Kailin expressed sincere compassion for Bella from the very beginning, and it was always a source of reassurance to arrive on the unit and learn that she would be B’s nurse for the day
The days that B spent in the NICU were highly emotional for our family, as B was on quite a roller coaster and gave us many scares. Kailin's tireless dedication to B's care was evident. Her steady, calming presence during times of crisis provided tremendous comfort to our family. Kailin truly became like family to us, getting to know Bella's big brother and helping him see and spend time with B in a meaningful way.
Kailin took the time to create numerous crafts for B's room, all made from her footprints, which made us feel more connected to B. And while B couldn't be held in the traditional way for a while, Kailin helped facilitate B’s mother holding her as soon as it was medically safe.
Kailin was a source of reassurance for our family and always took the time to answer our questions and help us understand B’s treatment plan. Kailin was a strong advocate for B's care so many times, for instance, during a dressing change of B's Omphalocele, B somehow managed to maneuver herself into a position that caused her Omphalocele to start bleeding. Kailin remained calm, held direct pressure, and had the doctor come immediately to the bedside to assess what could have been a very scary situation if anyone in the room had panicked. Having Kailin as B’s nurse had a profound impact on our family. She cared for B with extraordinary compassion, and her dedication and willingness to go above and beyond were truly remarkable. Although we would never wish for any child to require a NICU stay, we feel incredibly fortunate that Kailin was part of B’s care team. We are deeply grateful for all she has done for B and for our family.
