I'm submitting this DAISY nomination for our 4NW RN, Kadine Vassell, whose extraordinary compassion, professionalism, and unwavering dedication embody the essence of nursing excellence.
I recently received a heartfelt message from JR, a 78-year-old husband whose wife was under Kadine’s care. His words spoke not only to the clinical excellence she demonstrated, but to the profound humanity she brought to her role.
On the evening in question, Kadine had already completed her scheduled night shift. Due to staffing shortages caused by a snowstorm, she selflessly stayed an additional four hours to ensure patients continued to receive safe, attentive care. Even after these extended hours, when many would understandably be eager to return home, Kadine continued to demonstrate compassion that goes far beyond job expectations.
Mr. R shared that after tending to his wife with diligence, respect, and genuine compassion throughout her care, Kadine noticed the heavy snow accumulation outside. Knowing that Mr. R, at 78, would struggle to navigate the icy conditions, she voluntarily went outside, cleared the snow around his vehicle, and shoveled a path to ensure a safe, manageable departure.
This act was not clinical. It was not required. It was not requested. It was simply the instinctive kindness of a nurse who sees the whole patient—and the whole family.
Mr. R expressed that he “could not be more grateful and thankful for a true helping hand.” His words reflect what we know about Kadine: she doesn't just provide care; she creates safety, dignity, and comfort in moments of vulnerability.
