Julie treated my mother exactly the way I strive to treat my own patients and family members. Because of Julie, I was able to feel calm and confident that my mom was in the best possible hands.
My mother recently underwent colorectal surgery, and Julie was the preoperative RN who cared for her and followed her through to Phase 2 recovery.

From the moment we met her, it was clear that she practices nursing with exceptional diligence and integrity. She made sure every step of the process was completed to the highest standard and never cut corners. Her attention to detail and calm confidence immediately stood out.

As my mother’s daughter, I was already anxious about the procedure. I also come from a medical background myself—I am a surgical physician assistant—so I tend to notice every detail and have very high expectations for the care my family receives.

Being on the receiving side of healthcare can be difficult because I know what thorough, patient-centered care should look like. Unfortunately, it isn’t always what you see. Julie, however, embodied exactly the kind of clinician I hope my patients encounter.

Julie advocated for my mother in ways that truly made a difference. When we had concerns about the pain management plan for discharge, she took our concerns seriously and paged the resident so we could discuss it further. She ensured our questions were addressed and that we felt comfortable with the plan before leaving.

What impressed me just as much were the small, thoughtful things she did without being asked. My mother was embarrassed about the bowel prep and worried about making a mess in the pre-op area. Julie quietly placed extra pads on the bed ahead of time so my mom wouldn’t have to worry or feel embarrassed. It was such a simple act of foresight, but it preserved my mother’s dignity in a vulnerable moment.

She even thought ahead and brought an extra pad for the ride home, “just in case,” which meant so much to both of us. Julie’s care went far beyond completing tasks—it reflected empathy, anticipation of patient needs, and true advocacy.

As someone who works in healthcare, I know how demanding these roles can be, and I also know excellence when I see it. Julie treated my mother exactly the way I strive to treat my own patients and family members. Because of Julie, I was able to feel calm and confident that my mom was in the best possible hands.

She exemplifies what the DAISY Award is meant to recognize: compassionate, skillful nursing care that makes patients and families feel safe, respected, and truly cared for.
