I am the only social work coverage in Fetal Care. When I am off on PTO, they do not see social work, but we do continue our mental health screenings. This last week, when I was off, the last patient of the day had a high screening and an affirmative answer to the question of self-harm. We also screened the partner, and he also had an affirmative answer to the question of self-harm. Julie went above and beyond and spent a great deal of time with the couple discussing their mental health history. She also ensured their safety by discussing whether they had any plans or intentions for self-harm. This is often seen as outside the comfort zone for nurses, but Julie recognized the need, put her own comfort aside, and still went above and beyond. This was much appreciated by me and, I am sure, by this couple.
