Her compassion, clinical excellence, and personal connection left a lasting impact on me and helped carry me through an incredibly difficult journey.
I would like to recognize Julie for the extraordinary care she provided to me during one of the most significant and vulnerable seasons of my life.

I received the call from my transplant team at 11:30 pm. I was told they had a kidney for me and that I needed to be at Northwestern Hospital by 4:30 am the next morning.

Everything moved quickly after that. I gathered what I needed, prepared to leave my house, and before walking out the door, I prayed. I asked God to send an angel to watch over me during what would be the most life-changing and frightening night of my life.

When I was admitted to my room, and Julie walked in to begin the four-hour process of preparing me for surgery, it didn’t take long for me to realize that she was the answer to that prayer—the angel I had asked for.

Julie cared for me not once, but twice—first during my kidney transplant at Northwestern Hospital, and again months later when I returned due to complications.

From the very first interaction, it was clear that Julie is an exceptional nurse. She is skillful, compassionate, professional, and incredibly calming—exactly the kind of presence a patient hopes for during moments of fear and uncertainty.

Before my transplant surgery, my anxiety was understandably high. Julie had an amazing ability to put me at ease. As she prepped me for surgery, every word she spoke and every action she took helped soothe my fears. She answered every question I had—carefully, patiently, and thoroughly—and even addressed questions I didn’t yet know to ask. I never felt rushed or dismissed. Instead, I felt truly heard and genuinely cared for.

What sets Julie apart is the way she makes a patient feel.

Whenever she was in the room, I felt like I was the only patient in the entire hospital. She took time to get to know me as a person, not just a diagnosis or a chart. She listened to my story, learned about my work, and remembered details about my family that I shared during our conversations.

Four months after my transplant, when I unexpectedly found myself back in the hospital and assigned to one of Julie’s rooms, I was amazed. She immediately recognized me. She remembered my name, my occupation, and even stories I had shared with her months earlier. In a place where patients often feel like just another room number, Julie made me feel seen, remembered, and valued.

Julie exemplifies what it means to be a DAISY Award nurse. Her compassion, clinical excellence, and personal connection left a lasting impact on me and helped carry me through an incredibly difficult journey.

Northwestern Hospital is fortunate to have a nurse like Julie, and I am deeply grateful for the care she provided.

She is, in every sense of the word, extraordinary.
