The wife reached out to express her gratitude to Julie, and she realized that Julie went above and beyond, spending personal time to help and support her.
I would like to nominate Julie Holland, RN, in GI Medical Oncology, for her extraordinary care and compassion with a patient and his wife.

XX has been our patient since his initial colon cancer diagnosis in 2021, and we have been with him and his wife for almost 5 years, through the ups and downs, treatment side effects, recurrences, and improvements. We have established a great connection with them, and largely due to Julie's support and kindness.

XX did very well with his treatment until about 3 months ago, when he started progressing and declining clinically. Julie was instrumental in supporting XX and his wife through this process. She shared her personal story of her deceased husband with pancreatic cancer, which meant a lot to the patient.

As XX continued to decline, our APP and I had conversations about pausing chemo treatment and switching to supportive care/QOL-based treatment. Understandably, XX and his wife had many questions and were unsure of what path to follow. Julie talked to them on many occasions and helped them understand the thought process and the pros and cons of this decision. With leaning on Julie, they ultimately decided to back off on aggressive treatment, but were not yet ready for hospice.

At this time, XX had some illnesses/complications. XX was very positive and upbeat by nature and did not always tell us of symptoms. Julie personally called and checked in on him regularly and, as a result, was able to recognize an issue that would require admission. She arranged an ICC evaluation on one occasion and, on another, helped arrange a direct admit. If not for this care, XX would not have lived as long as he did.

Julie was also able to give XX and his wife an open channel for the family to communicate with her whenever there were needs or issues, or even when the wife just wanted to chat and offload some worries. His wife has expressed her greatest appreciation for this, as it was so hard for her to watch her husband decline steadily, and Julie was there to help her talk through it.

XX eventually went to hospice and recently passed peacefully. The wife reached out to express her gratitude to Julie, and she realized that Julie went above and beyond, spending personal time to help and support her. When XX passed, there were many tears shed by our clinic team, as he and his wife had made such an impression on us. I am very grateful to Julie for the exemplary care and compassion she showed this family. I believe she is very deserving of a DAISY Award.
