Joye could see someone desperate for help and support, and she showed up without question.
We had a rapid MRT transport for what appeared to be an aspirational event, causing severe respiratory failure. Joye was unbelievably helpful in communicating, transporting, and comforting the patient's daughter during the event. Joye did not leave the patient's daughter's side until more support/family arrived. The daughter of the patient was quite distraught and very emotional. She did not know what to do as this was a complete shock to her system, being an abrupt, acute event. Joye answered that call with open arms, support, and love. The daughter was so thankful for her and expressed so much gratitude in front of the staff for Joye several times. That patient's daughter continued to state, "Thank god for you, Joye, as I am an only child and have no support right now with all of this. I don't know what to do". Joye continued to be there for the patient and the daughter to help console her and communicate to her what was going on in real time. She sat and rubbed the daughter's back and made sure she understood she was not alone. Joye validated all of the daughter's thoughts, feelings, and emotions during the entire chaotic event. Seeing this from the outside and listening to the way Joye spoke, supported, and cared for both the patient and the patient's daughter was truly beautiful. It really showed that it doesn't have to take a lot to make a huge difference. She let the family cry on her shoulder and was there with open arms and a loving embrace. As a DAISY Award winner in the past, I believe that this was a prime example of someone going the extra mile for the patient and family to show true compassion in a time of need. Seeing the event roll out in person and Joye excelling in her role was very touching and made me smile, and extremely proud of the RN she is at heart. Joye could see someone desperate for help and support, and she showed up without question. This is what our job is all about.
