I had a Spanish speaking paitent who came in with no family or friends present. He had a massive ICH. The team wanted to find the next of kin to provide information about the patient's condition and the option to withdraw care. I was able to call one contact on the patient's phone. This individual was Spanish-speaking. Jovanny, a native Spanish speaker, stepped up to speak with this person over the phone to find the next of kin. The person we called was a roommate. We were able to start the hunt for family members. Jovanny went through 4 people before finally reaching the son. Jovanny set up the phone interpreter for an official conversation with the son. He took on the emotional burden of translating and listening to the son’s turmoil with his father. Jovanny took the ICC to participate in the convo to ensure that the communication loop was closed. He truly went above and beyond for this team and the patient so that someone could say goodbye to the patient.
