She knew exactly what she was doing and what to do, even though this may have been a situation she had never faced as a nurse.
An OB patient presented to the ED with a complaint of ruptured membranes. While the ED staff are able to care for these types of patients it is by no means our area of expertise. This nurse was asked to come down to the ED to help care for the patient and assist us. She immediately came down and took charge of the patient's care without hesitation. Unfortunately, the patient had a spontaneous miscarriage/delivery and Josie was the nurse in the room at this time. She was able to deliver this baby that unfortunately could not survive outside. She called for additional help and myself, Amy Wilhelm, and Dr. Hall all responded. She was excellent and truthfully didn't need our help at all. She knew exactly what she was doing and what to do, even though this may have been a situation she had never faced as a nurse. The on-call OB arrived shortly after this all happened but she stayed by the side of this patient the entire time, even going with her upstairs for her surgical D&C. She showed not only a depth of compassion that all nurses should strive for but also a complete control of a situation that is as heartbreaking as it is complex. I personally witnessed her sitting by the head of the patient talking to her and explaining everything that was happening on multiple occasions. If it were not for her this entire situation would have been that much more difficult for the patient as well as for all of us in the ED. She is not only a credit to IU Health Paoli but a credit to L&D nurses everywhere. In the past three years I have worked at Paoli I can think of any one more deserving of a DAISY Award than her.
