While rounding on a patient (M), she shared a special experience she had with me. I was not surprised to find out that this nurse was the person who touched her heart. M went on to tell me that at 77 years old this was her first surgery. She was extremely nervous, to the point that she was in tears. M stated she could see this nurse was very busy, passing by her room several times. She knew this nurse was a new nurse and very busy learning tasks. In her own words, “I cannot express to you how much it meant to me to have this young man who came into my room, knelt next to my bed, grabbed my hands and told me ‘you are in great hands with the surgery team. We are all here to support you.’ He stayed with me for over 10 minutes, and I know he had several things he needed to be doing, yet here he was focusing all of his attention on me. What a calming demeanor he had for being new. I would like to see someone recognize him for his caring action. He is going to be one heck of a nurse for your department.” After her procedure, she said this nurse was actually waiting for her. She continued to say, “What a nurse! What a huge heart this kid has inside of him. I am grateful Joey was my nurse.”
