I am writing to nominate ICU nurse John Kearney for a DAISY Award in recognition of the extraordinary care, compassion, and dedication he showed to my son and to me during the most difficult time of our lives. My son was admitted to the ICU after suffering a gunshot wound to his head. From that day until his heart stopped, John Kearney was a constant source of strength, comfort, and support. John took his role as a nurse far beyond his clinical duties. He treated my son with dignity and respect every single day, making sure he was comfortable and never mistreated. Even when my son could not respond, John cared for him with gentleness and humanity, as if he were his own. During this time, I was overwhelmed with grief and confusion. There were moments when I could not fully understand what was happening or find the strength to speak. John stepped in as my voice. He patiently explained medical information in a way I could understand and made sure my concerns were heard. He never rushed me, never dismissed me, and never left me feeling alone.
John Kearney showed a level of compassion, patience, and dedication that I will never forget. In the middle of heartbreak, he brought a sense of peace and reassurance that meant everything to me. He made sure my son was cared for with love until his very last moment. For the difference he made in my son’s care and in my life, I wholeheartedly believe John Kearney deserves to be recognized with a DAISY Award. He is truly an example of what nursing should be.
