His quick thinking and nursing intuition not only helped to save her life but also significantly enhanced her quality of life.
He is an exceptional nurse, and our emergency department is truly fortunate to have him as part of our team. He not only excels in his nursing skills but also embodies the compassionate spirit of nursing as a way of life. I received a call from him that highlighted his remarkable commitment to patient care. While driving, he noticed a woman lying alone in her yard, a sight that immediately raised his concerns. He instinctively turned his vehicle around to check on her, and upon approaching, he realized she appeared to be having a stroke and was unable to communicate. He stayed by her side, reassuring her until EMS arrived. He then called me to relay important information, noting that neither he nor the EMS team had observed any anticoagulants in her medication.
When the patient reached our ER, it was confirmed that she was indeed experiencing a stroke. In a truly compassionate gesture, he brought her home medications to the ER, ensuring we had everything we needed to provide her with the best possible care. Once we connected with her daughter and learned her last known well time, we promptly initiated an Acute Stroke Initiative (AR Saves) and administered TNK. Shortly afterward, the patient began to regain her ability to speak and move her right side. Her family and she was profoundly grateful for the swift and effective care she received. His quick thinking and nursing intuition not only helped to save her life but also significantly enhanced her quality of life. It's rare for someone to stop and help a stranger in need, and his actions exemplify the heart and dedication that make nursing such a vital profession.
