Her actions transformed an incredibly frightening experience into one where I felt supported, informed, and heard.
I would like to nominate Joelle from the ICU Surgical Unit, Main Campus, for the DAISY Award. During my father’s unexpected hospitalization in Detroit, Joelle provided truly extraordinary, compassionate care to both him and me. We had traveled from Houston for what was meant to be a short holiday visit, but my 87-year-old father fell and suffered a head injury, and was admitted with a brain bleed for observation. We were suddenly navigating an unfamiliar hospital system and new doctors while still grieving the recent loss of my mother and fearing that my father might also pass away. Joelle stepped into that chaos with calm, kindness, and unwavering advocacy. One of the most powerful examples of her compassion occurred when my family and I were overwhelmed with anxiety and questions about my father’s condition. Joelle encouraged us to come early so we could be present during the doctors’ rounds, clearly wanting us to feel informed and included rather than sidelined. Before the team arrived, she took time to listen to all of our concerns and then, during rounds, she purposefully raised those questions with the physicians—framing them in a way that ensured we would hear and understand the answers. She gently waved me closer to the bedside, so I could follow the conversation, invite my input when appropriate, and feel like an active partner in my father’s care. In moments when I felt too emotional or afraid to speak up, she quietly did it for me, without hesitation and without making me feel like a burden or difficult. Throughout the hospitalization, I asked constant questions about medications, test results, and what to expect once we returned home. Joelle answered every single one with patience and clarity, never showing frustration, and never minimizing my concerns. When she sensed how tense and exhausted I was, she didn’t just focus on tasks; she sat with me in the room and talked about her kids, the snow that was coming, and her drives home in the winter weather—small, human conversations that pulled me out of my fear and let me breathe for a moment. Those moments of connection eased my anxiety, helped me feel less alone in a strange city, and allowed me to trust that my dad was not just a patient in a bed, but a person genuinely cared for by his nurse. Because of Joelle’s presence, I felt confident in the care my father was receiving and reassured that our questions and worries truly mattered. Her actions transformed an incredibly frightening experience into one where I felt supported, informed, and heard. She consistently demonstrated kindness, patience, professionalism, advocacy, and a steady, reassuring calmness. She treated both my father and me with respect and dignity at every step, honoring not just his medical needs but our emotional needs as well. For these reasons, I believe that Joelle fully embodies the spirit and purpose of the DAISY Award and deserves to be recognized for her extraordinary nursing care.
