She talked with him on several occasions, and she absolutely elevated his mood and made him forget his own situation.
This recognition is well past overdue, but it has always been on my mind. My husband was in the hospital during the fall of 2013 for a little over 60 days. He was mentally alert and afraid as he was nearing the end of his life and needed something to occupy his time and his mind. After my husband’s passing, I ran into Joella while volunteering, and she told me how she came to visit with him. She was a student nurse at the time. Her class was brought up to 3 West as part of their studies and asked to interview a patient of their choosing. The instructor said that one student must interview my husband. On paper, he was an elderly man dying of cancer – and no one wanted to interview him. She stepped forward and chose him. She talked with him on several occasions, and she absolutely elevated his mood and made him forget his own situation. They spoke on many topics, and he thoroughly enjoyed her visits. She wholeheartedly brightened his day and most importantly, she made him feel ‘alive’. She was a blessing to both of us, and I cannot thank her enough for her efforts. When we came home from the hospital, he was bedridden – and I was his caregiver. I did not honor her at that time, but recently, I ran into her again on my volunteer duties and immediately knew this was something I very much wanted to do!
