She is well respected, and her voice never wavered when it came to speaking up for the concern and safety of our patients and doing the right thing.
Joanne has been a nurse for forty-seven years. Over the course of her forty-seven years, I don’t think there was any nursing unit in which she worked, that didn't have a lasting impression of her compassion and dedication to nursing.

Upon her completion of the Brunswick, Lunenburg, and Mecklenburg Practical School of Nursing Program that was offered at Community Memorial Hospital, she began her career in 1975 as an LPN working on what was then Central Wing. She continued her education and graduated from Vance Granville Community College in North Carolina as a Registered Nurse in 1985. Over the years, she worked in various areas of the hospital inclusive of the ER, OB, Med-Surg, Ambulatory, and PACU. She found her passion for perioperative nursing and was the Paranesthesia Manager at CMH from 1991 until 1997. She became the Director of Surgical Services now known as Perioperative Services in 1997.

When we moved into the new hospital in 2017, this Nurse Director took on additional responsibilities which included Labor, Delivery, Recovery, and Post-Partum Care. This Extraordinary Nurse did not waver from the additional responsibility of managing an additional unit.

Her colleagues describe her as, compassionate, caring, goes above and beyond, and always has the patient’s best interest first and foremost. She is well respected, and her voice never wavered when it came to speaking up for the concern and safety of our patients and doing the right thing. She was well noted for her leadership demeanor and would always help her team accept change and engage them in decision-making. She is well noted at CMH for her strong Christian faith, her love for her family, her compassion for nursing, and her commitment to serving others. Joanne retired in January 2023 but her presence at VCU CMH will forever be remembered.
