It’s not hard to talk about all the amazing things Joanne does for her patients every single day. She has a special way of connecting with everyone she meets, even with those who make it difficult. Joanne listens with her heart and advocates fiercely for her patients, especially for those who cannot advocate for themselves.
We once cared for a patient with multiple disabilities, including cerebral palsy, who had experienced neglect and abuse before coming to our unit. She stayed with us for over a year. When she first arrived, she was fearful and withdrawn, barely speaking and trusting no one. But Joanne was determined to show her kindness, patience, and understanding.
Over time, she built a bond with her that was rooted in trust and love. This patient didn’t have family to visit or provide her with basic personal items. She often went without even the simplest things, other than what was provided by the hospital, which helps a person feel clean, confident, and cared for. Joanne noticed this right away. She knew that everyone deserves to feel beautiful, valued, and loved, no matter their circumstances.
So, week after week, Joanne used her own money to buy this sweet girl special items: soaps, lotions, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant, perfume, and hair accessories. Like clockwork, whenever the patient’s supplies began to run low, Joanne would quietly restock them without ever expecting recognition. Thanks to her selflessness and dedication, this young woman was able to feel cared for, clean, and special every single day. Joanne gave her so much more than hygiene products; she gave her dignity, compassion, and the reminder that she mattered. Joanne’s heart for nursing goes far beyond her job description.
She embodies what it truly means to be a nurse: selfless, compassionate, and deeply devoted to the well-being of others. She is the kind of nurse every patient hopes to have, and every colleague is grateful to work beside. Joanne is, without a doubt, deserving of the DAISY Award.
