September 2026 Honoree
Jivann Tate, DNP Candidate, RN
I would like to commend Jivann Tate for the extraordinary compassion she showed while caring for a patient experiencing homelessness.
During report, Jivann learned that the patient had received foot care earlier in his stay and that the condition of his feet suggested he had been going without adequate shoes for some time. Rather than simply accepting this information and moving on with her nursing care, she took the time to investigate further. What she found was that although the patient technically had footwear, it offered him little to no real coverage or protection.
Jivann recognized a need that extended far beyond the walls of the hospital. She knew that once this patient was discharged, he would once again be out in the world without shoes that could safely protect his feet. In that moment, she made a decision that went beyond her clinical duties: she would buy him a pair of shoes herself.
Later, she learned that his birthday was the very next day. That discovery only strengthened her resolve. She went out and bought him a new pair of Adidas sneakers — not only meeting a real and pressing need, but presenting them to him as a birthday gift.
The patient's response was deeply moving. He was grateful not simply because he had received new shoes, but because someone had seen him, understood what he needed, and thought he was worth celebrating. For a patient with very limited resources, what could have been an ordinary pair of sneakers became something far more meaningful: protection, dignity, and a reminder that he mattered.
Jivann's actions reflect what extraordinary nursing care looks like. She looked beyond the immediate clinical tasks and saw the whole person in front of her. She noticed a need that could easily have gone unaddressed and chose to personally act on it with compassion and generosity.
Jivann didn't have to buy this patient shoes. She chose to, because she cared about what would happen to him after he left her care. And when she learned it was his birthday, she made sure a man who might otherwise have had little to celebrate received both something he desperately needed and the experience of being remembered and honored.
That is the kind of nursing care patients never forget — and it is why I believe Jivann is so deserving of the DAISY Award.
