April 2026 Honoree
Jira Neil Gonzales, BSN, RN
I would like to commend Nurse Jiji Jira because she represents the perfect balance of compassion and intelligence in nursing. From the very beginning, she showed genuine kindness and empathy. She treated me with dignity and respect, always taking the time to listen and make sure I felt heard. During a challenging time, her warmth and calm presence brought comfort and reassurance when I needed it most.
What truly stood out was not only her compassionate heart, but also how incredibly knowledgeable and sharp she is. She anticipated needs before I even had to ask, explained things clearly in a way that made sense, and demonstrated confidence and critical thinking in every aspect of my care. It was obvious that she is not only caring, but exceptionally skilled. Jiji Jira made me feel safe — physically and emotionally. Knowing that someone so competent and compassionate was overseeing my care gave me tremendous peace of mind. She embodies what nursing should be: intelligent, attentive, and deeply human. I am truly grateful for the care she provided and believe she is more than deserving of this recognition.

I would like to proudly commend Jira for being an exceptional and compassionate nurse. I have personally witnessed Jira care for patients who were considered “difficult” or challenging by others. These were patients who were sometimes impatient, frustrated, noncompliant, or emotionally overwhelmed due to their medical conditions. Despite this, Jira never allowed those behaviors to influence the quality of care she provided. She approached each patient with the same calm demeanor, patience, and respect that she shows to all her patients.
What stands out most about Jira is her unwavering commitment to preserving patient dignity. I have seen her take the time to assist with personal care needs that others might overlook—such as shaving, brushing teeth, grooming hair, and ensuring patients felt clean and presentable. She believes these are not “extra” tasks but essential components of holistic nursing care. On more than one occasion this past year, I observed her offer to shave patients who had been hospitalized for extended periods.
One particular patient had been in the hospital for several days and had become withdrawn. After Jira helped him shave and freshen up, his entire demeanor changed. He expressed deep gratitude, stating that he “finally felt human again.” That small but meaningful act restored not only his appearance but also his dignity and spirit.
Jira does not discriminate. She treats every patient equally—regardless of attitude, diagnosis, background, or circumstances. She demonstrates fairness, empathy, and professionalism in every interaction. She does not complain about assignments and does not shy away from patients who require extra patience and compassion. Her actions consistently reflect the true spirit of nursing—compassion, advocacy, dignity, and excellence. Jira exemplifies what it means to go above and beyond, not through grand gestures, but through meaningful, patient-centered care that truly makes a difference. For these reasons and many more, I wholeheartedly believe Jira deserves recognition through the DAISY Award.
