He was amazing. He not only cared for Mom as if she were his own mother, but he also made sure we had what we needed.
I wanted to take a few moments to share an experience I had while in your hospital. What I really would like to share is the attitude of one of the ICU nurses named Jimmy. He worked night shift and took care of Mom early on in her stay. He was amazing. He not only cared for Mom as if she were his own mother, but he also made sure we had what we needed. The water vending machine wasn't working in your waiting area, so he made sure we had water. A couple times he offered blankets.
As the only nurse in the family and the medical POA, he showed me mom's imaging and explained things to me so that I could share with the family. He was gentle and patient. He was so kind and answered all of the questions asked of him with ease. He wasn't rattled by all the people. He was a nurse in every sense of the word, and he represented the role well. Before I left, I asked him to ensure that a doctor spoke to my brother and one of my sisters the next day as they were struggling with the gravity of the situation and unable to accept reality at the time. I asked that they be shown the images and be able to get all their questions answered, as they were the two hold-outs for us extubating mom. I got a call later (and I don't remember if it was that night after I had left or early the next morning) stating a doctor wanted to talk with all of us. I know this is because Jimmy had done what I asked him to do and set things in motion.
Each year, there is a nomination for the D/FW Great 100 Nurses. If I knew Jimmy's last name, I would probably nominate him based solely on what I saw in just a few short hours. As a nurse, I am often more critical of nurses who do not live up to their role and am not afraid to voice my concerns and thoughts. I had no concerns at all when I left that mom would receive the best care under Jimmy's watch.
I do hope that Jimmy is still there, doing what he does, and probably not receiving much in return due to the nature of his patients. However, please make sure he is aware of how much our family recognized his worth and appreciated the care he provided to our mother in her final few days. He is a definite stand-out and we thank him from the bottom of our hearts. I truly cannot say enough regarding his care and kindness to a very distressed family. His character was evident by his actions and is forever engraved in my memory.
