May 2026 Honoree
Jillian Black, BSN, RN, CEN
Jillian Black has shown extraordinary human compassion by helping to learn to care for patients who need specialized or advanced care after a sexual assault. In one month, Jillian assisted with 3 assault cases and helped meet the very basic needs of these patients where there were no available resources to provide them.
The first patient became very anxious and wanted to leave; the patient had been at the hospital for hours, was hungry, and was escalating to the point of wanting to leave. Jillian went to the gift shop and showered this patient with all the goodies due to there being no resources or funding for the care of these patients post assault. Jillian's simple act of kindness helped make her traumatic exam more tolerable, and the patient got through it because of this.
The next sexual assault patient Jillian assisted with needed clothes because her clothes were going into police custody. Neither victim services nor the hospital had available resources to help this patient with clothing. Jillian had clothes brought to the hospital along with hot food for her. The patient was able to be discharged in clothing and not paper scrubs. This simple act helped the patient to feel more human again and less like a clinical subject.
No one asked these things of Jillian; she just does it out of the kindness of who she is. I appreciate Jillian and her selfless soul.
