I am the pastor for a patient who was in the neuroscience ICU after a major stroke. One of the church sisters had called to bring communion for her.
When I entered the room, I was so nervous. She had this huge crook in her neck. Unable to see me or hear me.
Jessica came into the room with a bright smile on her face and introduced herself. She asked what question she could answer. I asked why there was a tube in her nose, asked about all the numbers on the screen, and what happened to my friend.
She was extremely professional and kind during a very difficult situation.
I asked if Sister Sylvia could have communion. Jessica explained that she cannot swallow because of her stroke. I thought that she could not have her communion and was a bit flustered.
Jessica reassured me that she had a safe way to give communion. She was able to even dissolve the wafer so she could get both the blood and body of Christ.
She ended up coming back to the ICU. No one had updated me on what happened. I flagged Jessica down to say hello. I asked for an update, and she gave me an update. The news was awful.
She held me while I sobbed and apologized for the events.
This is a nurse who is absolutely meant for this job. She is an angel.
