Jessica didn't have to go the lengths she did to ensure this patient's needs were met, but she did.
We had a complex, special needs surgical patient with a surgical site that was difficult to manage. They required frequent dressing changes that were very painful. This type of wound is typically managed by surgeons themselves, but we had difficulty contacting them. Eventually, they agreed to let our wound nurse manage the dressing. Two different surgeons ordered 2 different dressings, but they both failed. Jessica was tenacious, however, and kept checking on the patient even though she didn't have to. After 2 days and 3 different dressings, she was able to place a dressing that worked. Their baseline pain was almost completely alleviated, and they no longer required frequent, excruciating dressing changes. Additionally, the type of dressing applied will significantly reduce the amount of time it takes to heal. I think our specialty nurses are often overlooked for the impact they have on our patients. Jessica didn't have to go the lengths she did to ensure this patient's needs were met, but she did. I think that without her compassion and determination, this patient would have had a much more arduous recovery.
