August 2026 Honoree
Jessica Acevada, RN
My Nana was hospitalized after a tough fall resulting in a fractured and dislocated hip. My family elected for surgery to try and give her the best shot at recovery. Unfortunately, my Nana has suffered from dementia for years, and this fall and surgery were just too much for her body and mind to handle. After family discussions, we decided hospice was the right course for Nana.
Jessica joined her care team on her third day on hospice. My family is extremely grateful for all of the care for my Nana, compassion for my family, and advocacy that she provided that day. Jessica pushed for better pain and anxiety control to ensure she was always comfortable. She was frequently rounding as well to check in on not only Nana, but the rest of my family too.
At this point, Nana was in a shared room. Jessica advocated for her to be transferred to a private, single-occupancy room so Nana could have more privacy and space for our family to be by her side. This resulted in Nana being moved the same day.
One of the most amazing things Jessica did, however, had nothing to do with medical care. My Aunt was summoned to jury duty in the middle of this process. Jessica personally called the court to have my Aunt excused from jury duty so she could stay by her mother’s side.
Our family will never forget the kindness and dedication Jessica showed us during this very difficult week. She went so far above and beyond in every sense: medically, emotionally, and personally. My whole family is deeply grateful she was one of the RNs by Nana’s side
