I wanted to take a minute and recognize Jesse Combs for his outstanding work. Jesse floated to our unit and was given a team that could wear on you after a few hours. Jesse displayed characteristics of being a nurse that, on some days, seem to be lost.

Patience – Jesse displayed so much patience with his team, never batting an eye to redirect and come up with ways to combat ICU Delirium. He made sure the lights were on, did mobility, interacted with the patient to keep him on a day schedule, ended his very busy shift by placing the patient in a stretcher chair, and walked with the patient and family to find a window to get some bright sunlight.

Advocacy – Jesse went above and beyond to tackle the obstacle of completing an MRI. Not only was this patient confused and uncooperative, but the patient also had a device that we needed to clear for an MRI. While others seemed not to push, Jesse, at one point, was grabbing a magnet to see if the device had metal on it to get it done!

Communication – He communicates with co-workers, patients, and families. I overheard many conversations throughout the shift, and his compassion and confidence were shown through each one. Jesse is a role model for nursing. I know the patients, (although they couldn’t say it), and the families walked away that day knowing that the best care possible was given to their loved ones!!
