He remained composed, compassionate, and committed. Whether it was assisting with bathroom care or helping de-escalate a potential crisis, Jerome was always present and dependable.
In recent months, the clinical acuity of our unit has been higher than usual and has resulted in patients being admitted to the hospital who are not able to participate in some aspects of our unit program. One patient, who stands out as an individual who had severe limits, was easily frustrated and had significant difficulty communicating his needs and wants in a way that could be understood, and allowed the staff to assist him. Reflecting on the course of hospitalization for this patient, I can’t help but think of Jerome Job, BSN, RN, a member of our nursing team.
No matter how intense the situation became, Jerome was always there, ready to help. Working in psychiatry means accepting that patients are doing the best they can in managing distressing and unwanted thoughts and feelings. Jerome always stepped forward to assist this patient and the staff in caring for him. While others might understandably hesitate, Jerome stepped forward. He was quick, calm, and incredibly skilled at redirecting aggressive behavior. Even when physical contact was made, he never let it affect the quality of care he provided. He remained composed, compassionate, and committed. Whether it was assisting with bathroom care or helping de-escalate a potential crisis, Jerome was always present and dependable. His deep understanding of the reason why the patient was behaving in this manner made a profound difference in the care the nursing team provided.
Beyond this, Jerome consistently demonstrates an extraordinary ability to help patients de-escalate. Jerome handles each clinical situation with remarkable ease. Many patients request to speak with Jerome as a testament to the trust and comfort he provides. Jerome always puts his patients first.
As a Charge RN, Jerome’s flexibility and leadership are unmatched. He adapts seamlessly to the ever-changing pace of the unit and never misses a beat. His presence brings a sense of calm and peace to the unit.
Jerome is exceptional in so many ways. He uplifts others, always making sure that staff feel appreciated and patients are respected and cared for.
There are countless reasons why Jerome deserves the DAISY Award – these are just a few. He is a rare and invaluable presence.
