We recently had a patient in our ICU who was in the hospital for more than 50 days. Jeremy Sparks was assigned to take care of the patient for many of those days. During the last days of the patient's life, Jeremy had been the patient's nurse all week and was scheduled to be off near the end of the week. Jeremy ended up picking up a shift on his day off so he could continue to take care of the patient and his family. Jeremy went out of his way to make sure the patient had the best care possible, as well as to make sure the family had everything they needed. The patient's wife told me that she could not believe that Jeremy had not "gotten bored with us". The patient's wife went on to explain how any time something happened, they would run to the nurse's desk and ask Jeremy a question. He was always kind to answer all of their questions. The patient had a very large family, and Jeremy was patient enough to answer each person's question as well. The patient's family told me that they now considered Jeremy as part of their family. It is my pleasure to nominate Jeremy Sparks for the DAISY Award. He provided a level of care and compassion to this patient and his family that is extraordinary!
