The patient was reluctant to go to treatment because she was worried about her dog. Jenny took the dog in and kept it in her home for about a week.
The following is the original event narrative Jenny wrote regarding the patient that spawned the good catch award, she wrote this to advocate for the patient: "Several days after pt admission to Sageview I was contacted by the Sageview Social Worker. She asked if I would be willing to drive to the place where the patient's car had been left. I did this, and a neighbor told me it had been towed. I relayed this info to Beth and told her to try Ira's Towing. Several days later, I contacted the Sageview charge nurse to see if the car had been located. She said it had not. I then called Ira's Towing, and they did have the car. I got the information about how we could retrieve the car and what the cost to her would be. I relayed that to the charge RN. On the day prior to discharge, I discussed a plan with the charge nurse. The plan was to send the patient from Sageview to Ira's to pick up her car. After that, she would present to the Madras Hospital and I would meet her there to give her her dog, which I had been keeping for her week of treatment. I received a call from Madras HS. The patient was at the hospital. I brought her dog up and found the patient sitting on the bench outside the Galleria with 4 hospital bags of belongings. It was now 1615 and Ira's would close @ 1700. I got her a cab to Ira's and that was the last I heard until this morning when she returned to the ED. She was unable to retrieve her car due to cost, and also had been unable to pick up her prescriptions. She said they were called in to a Redmond pharmacy. I have involved social work to hopefully assist her to get her meds and her vehicle."
Because of her situation, the patient would not have the capability of nominating Jenny, but Jenny anonymously volunteered to keep her dog so she could get the treatment she needed. The patient was reluctant to go to treatment because she was worried about her dog. Jenny took the dog in and kept it in her home for about a week. She also made extra efforts on her own time to help the patient find her car and to get her a ride to retrieve the car. She did all of this without anyone really knowing. This is by far above and beyond her job responsibilities, and I believe that is what the spirit of the DAISY Award is all about. I am Jenny's manager, but I am nominating her on behalf of the patient, who would not have even realized the extra efforts Jenny made for her.
