Sometimes the difference between life and death is compassion, kindness, and love.
My Uncle was admitted to the hospital, initially placed on the first floor. He was very scared. Many Doctors and Nurses wanted to perform a COVID-19 swab, but he refused. With each refusal, the staff became more irritated, and the quality of his care suffered. After a couple of days, he was transferred to 2 West. At this point, he needed more oxygen and support. This added to the frustration of care staff, convinced he had covid or influenza – A. After being transferred to 2 West, he was introduced to Dr. J (Infectious Disease Resident) and also Nurse Jenn D. After a discussion with Dr. J, who listened and showed compassion (recognizing a fearful patient, not a “difficult, stubborn” one), he was able to get my Uncle to agree to the swab. It was negative. Throughout his stay, he would often refuse to take certain things, not out of stubbornness, but out of fear. Most nurses would just walk away, but not Nurse Jenn. She would come in and go over what every pill and every bag of IV medication was EVERY time! She recognized his fear and, through her compassion, found a way to build trust. My Uncle responded with complete cooperation and gratitude. He was finally released to go home, and I truly believe that would never have been possible without Nurse Jenn D and Dr. J; he very well could have died. It takes an incredibly special person to recognize that patient care is just as much about relationships and trust as it is medicine and tests. Sometimes the difference between life and death is compassion, kindness, and love. God bless Jenn D!
