When our son C arrived at 37 weeks and 3 days, he came with an oxygen mask, a feeding tube, and fluid in his lungs. My wife J was recovering from a C-section, separated from our son for most of his first four days. I had promised her that wherever C went, I would follow, so I walked those NICU halls behind him, stepped into a room full of incubators, heat lamps, and cords, and watched nurses work around him with a calm that told me, before anyone said a word, that he was going to be okay. Jennifer C. was one of those nurses. She walked into that storm and became our calm.

Over several days, Jenn stayed completely on top of C's care. We always knew where he stood. C took days to grow comfortable with bottle feeding, and Jenn navigated every step with patience and precision. When he made sounds or movements that confused us, she decoded them and taught us our son's language before we even knew we needed to learn it. The moment that will stay with us forever came when the doctors were ready to discharge C. Jenn wasn't. He hadn't urinated as she expected, and she knew sending him home risked bringing him right back without the NICU safety net. She stood firm, advocating directly and professionally for one more day. Watching her go to bat for a baby who couldn't speak for himself was one of the most powerful things I've ever witnessed. Confident, unwavering, completely focused on what was right for him. She was his voice when he had none.

Jenn also understood that C's well-being was inseparable from his mother's. One moment I'll never forget was when Jenn overheard J talking herself down. Exhausted from surgery, aching to be present in ways her body wouldn't allow, J was blaming herself for being tired, for not being there enough. Jenn stopped and met her exactly where she was. She reminded J she deserved credit, not criticism. Then she went further, sharing her own struggles as a mother so J would know she wasn't alone. Jenn didn't just reassure her. She rebuilt her confidence by being completely, vulnerably human. Jenn saw a mother who needed grace and gave it to her. Then she turned around and saw a father who was ready and made sure of that too. Every visit, she had me changing diapers, bottle-feeding, holding C, always explaining the why so what I learned there would carry home with us.

Today C is thriving, eating like a champion and showing more personality every day. Every milestone, every smile, carries Jenn's fingerprints. She gave him one more day to be exactly where he needed to be. She is the reason his mother left healing, not broken. She is the reason his father left ready, ready for C, ready for whatever comes next. There is no one more deserving of this award than Jennifer C.

Thank you, Jennifer, for your exceptional compassion, advocacy, and dedication to your patients. You truly make a difference.
